Preconference

Preconference sessions at Learning2 offer participants a chance to take an in-depth look at various topics, with a focus on hands-on and active learning that is difficult to do in shorter sessions.

The preconference will be held on Thursday, November 5, prior to the opening of the main conference.

  • Precon registration runs from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
  • The session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, including a morning break and lunch
  • Conference starts at 5:00 p.m.

We are offering three Preconference Sessions @ Learning2 Africa 2015:


Learning Through Inquiry

InquiryLearning1An inquiry into inquiry models, the elements of inquiry, strategies and questioning techniques, as well as some application to a current unit.

Objectives:
  • To clarify the meaning of inquiry and its implications for our teaching practices.
  • To explore teaching practices that help develop an inquiry based classroom.
  • To provide an opportunity for professional reflection and dialogue.

Making

Making-tech-3Robotics. Makey-Makey. Go Pro. Raspberry PI. Arduino. Drones. 3d Printers. Plastic Water Bottles, Glue, Tape and String. How do we best leverage technology to tune into students’ imaginations and develop their creativity?

Technology Integration Coaches and teachers from K-12 at AISJ have been tinkering with hands on tech for few couple years now in a variety of contexts. Join us for a day where all can share what they’ve learned and maybe pick-up some new ways of looking at tech.

Outcomes:

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Gain some new insights into the role of hands on technology as a driver of inquiry in the classroom and the curriculum
  • Get an overview of digital fabrication labs and maker spaces and the types of projects that can be done in these spaces.
  • Explore different models adopted by schools to integrate these spaces into the curriculum
  • Collaborate with other teachers to imagine  and prototype hands-on projects relevant to their teaching
  • Gain hands-on experience with some of the major tools of a digital fabrication lab

All teachers interested in learning through making and inventing.


You Coach Teachers? What? How?

TeacherCoaching2What is coaching and how do coaches work with teachers on a daily basis to develop best practices in the classroom? In this workshop we will share the characteristics of effective coaching, some practical tools that really work and some of the pitfalls, challenges and successes!

Objectives:

In this workshop, participants will:

  • understand the characteristics of effective coaching
  • share some practical coaching tools
  • discuss the challenges and successes
Audience:

This workshop is suitable for Technology Integration Coaches and anyone interested in coaching.
